Reading Sci-Fi / Fantasy

I've got a different questions for visitors here: I'm considering a new project and would like to know what kind of sci-fi and/or fantasy you like to read. Be as vague or specific as you wish.

If this isn't a genre you like to read, that's cool but I don't need to know.

Thanks, all! And Happy Thanksgiving to those in the US.

SciFi/Fantasy

Hey There,

Just thought I would answer your question. I personally am a fan of Sci-Fi stories with alot of backstory and plot behind them. I enjoy reading stories that feel like they are a long running adventure and go beyond a single plot/ conflict, resolution. The grander the revelations the better. I personally don't think a SciFi story should start at the beginning but rather pick up around the middle and go from there as it leaves openings for exploration of characters later.

I enjoy stories that give information about the surroundings or technology without just glossing over them without giving them any validity. Obviously since they are stories nobody expects the writer to be an expert in physics, space, or time but having good explanations are important.

I dislike stories that end up following predefined ideas, especially in SciFi. The idea that every world would develop the exact same sort of marriage as us, or races would live to the same age, or everyone would generate the same kind of technology is kind of ... out there.

When it comes to story, I've always been a fan more of writing adventures for other people to help drive the story. Forum or chat based role-play. In my mind that makes for the best kind of stories because the players, even if its only Free Form, take the story in directions you would never expect.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on this!

Thanks!

Thank you very much. That was very helpful. Anyone else who'd like to chime in is more than welcome to. I'd love to hear what people think.

Thanks again, Dalliance. (Love the name, btw)

I love all Sci Fi and Fantasy...

I love to read all kinds of scifi and fantasy books. I have been know to write stories in both geners as well. For scifi, I prefer the stories that feel like they are part of somthing bigger. Where every story is an "Episode" of a larger story. I really like it when they show groups evolving technologicly different from each other. Some of my favorite stories are from the Star Trek or Star Wars universes. I also love the Firefly series.

For fantisy, I love all kinds. I have read so many it would take me pages to write them all. Some of my favorite would have to be the High Fantasy of Tolken.

Then there is the blending of the two types. I really enjoy Shadowrun (obviously by looking at my websites) for it's blending of fantasy and scifi. It mashes everything we know of the world today and slams it with scifi and fantasy 63 years in the future. It is a good read.

As I said, I love to read and I read all kinds of books...
